Discover How SupremeTech Delivered Travel App Development for JTB

SupremeTech supported JTB in travel app development for notabi, a social networking app that helps users record, share, and discover travel memories. From agile delivery to a scalable cloud-based architecture, this project shows how JTB turned a new business idea into a live product in just 9 months.

Since its founding in 1912, JTB Corporation has remained a leading name in Japan’s domestic and international travel industry, continuously creating memorable journeys for travelers. In recent years, the company has expanded beyond its traditional travel services and taken an active role in regional revitalization across Japan through initiatives such as community exchange programs and inbound tourism support, and now is travel app development.
This case study explores SupremeTech’s travel app development support for notabi, a social networking app created as JTB’s new business initiative, designed to help users record, share, and discover travel memories in a more personal and engaging way.

Overview

The travel industry has become more experience-driven than ever. Travelers do not just want to search for destinations. They want to understand how a place feels, what others discovered there, and why it matters. Traditional travel platforms, map tools, and social media services offer parts of that journey, but they often do not make it easy to find authentic, personal travel stories in one place.
JTB saw the potential to create a new kind of travel platform that could fill that gap. The goal was to build a social networking app where users could share travel experiences through a location-based interface. Travelers could record favorite moments, create albums from photos and text, and discover new destinations through the real stories of others. More than just launching a new digital product, JTB was creating a new touchpoint for travel inspiration and community.
To make that possible, JTB needed a travel app development partner that could move quickly, understand the needs of the Japanese market, and support both product delivery and long-term technical growth. That is where SupremeTech came in.

The Challenges

JTB had a clear business vision, but bringing that vision to life required the right balance of speed, flexibility, and technical planning, the requirements are:

  • The Client wanted to turn a new business idea into a real app and bring it to market within a short timeframe.
  • The Client wanted to go beyond the initial release and continue improving features flexibly based on user feedback after launch.
  • The Client wanted to build not only the app itself, but a technical foundation that could support operations, maintenance, and future scalability.

With the core features are:

  • Map-based experience logging: Pin and record your travel experiences on a map.
  • Album creation function: Create beautiful travelogues by combining photos and text.
  • Sharing and discovering experiences: Browse other users’ travel experiences and discover new destinations.
  • Community feature: Interaction between users with common interests

The Solutions

SupremeTech supported the project from requirements definition through development, release, and maintenance. We approached the engagement as a collaborative journey, combining agile product delivery with a scalable architecture strategy.

To achieve that, SupremeTech combined an agile development approach with a scalable cloud-based architecture:

  • Flutter for cross-platform mobile development
Flutter was used to build the mobile app for both iOS and Android, helping reduce development time and cost while maintaining a smooth and consistent user experience across devices.
  • Firebase and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) as the core cloud infrastructure
Firebase and GCP were used to create a flexible backend foundation that can scale with future user growth, while also keeping the initial infrastructure lean and efficient.
  • Google Maps API for the core map-based experience
Because notabi is a map based app for sharing travel memories, Google Maps API played a central role in delivering the location-based user experience.
  • Device and cloud-based data management for better usability
User photos and travel records were managed across both the device and the cloud, helping improve usability while also supporting better operational cost control.
  • Integrated services for faster development and more stable operations
Core functions such as user authentication, database management, and location services were centrally built using services including Firebase and the Google Maps API. This integrated structure made it easier to develop and add new features quickly as the product evolved.
  • Enterprise-level security for long-term reliability
By follow Google’s enterprise-level security standards, the platform reduced the risk of data breaches and gave JTB a more reliable foundation for long-term service operation.

Agile delivery for speed and flexibility
From the start of the project in July 2023, SupremeTech worked in an agile development model with product reviews every two weeks, along with regular daily and weekly meetings. This allowed JTB to monitor progress closely, share feedback in real time, and move the project forward with speed and flexibility.

The Result

With SupremeTech’s support, JTB successfully turned notabi from a new business idea into a live product in a relatively short timeframe. The project moved from concept to official release in 9 months, giving JTB a faster path to market while still leaving room for product review and improvement along the way.

The team completed the MVP in 5 months as planned, then continued with additional feature development based on JTB’s review and validation. After roughly 3 more months of development, notabi was officially released in April 2024.Beyond the launch itself, the project gave JTB a stronger foundation for long-term growth. Instead of building only for the initial release, the app was prepared to support future user growth and ongoing service improvement. Since launch, development has continued through monthly updates, allowing the product to keep evolving with user needs and business direction.
