Migrate to Shopify: How to Do It Without Losing Data or Sales

Goto Shopify started inside SupremeTech’s Product Showcase, an internal program where the team pitches and builds solutions for problems they keep seeing in real client work. One problem kept coming up more than any other: moving data across platforms, whether from another e-commerce system or from other sales channels, into Shopify. When this isn’t handled properly, it can cause lost orders, mismatched inventory, or customer records that no longer line up, and the risk only grows at the enterprise level, where a single catalog can run into tens or even hundreds of thousands of SKUs.
That’s also where this story usually begins for the merchant. A business has been running steadily on WooCommerce, BigCommerce, or Magento for years. Sales are healthy, the catalog has grown into the thousands, and customer records go back a long way. At some point, the decision comes to migrate to Shopify, usually to reach new markets or tap into a stronger app ecosystem for growth. The hard part shows up the moment someone has to actually move all that product, customer, and order data across, accurately, quickly, and without shutting the store down in the process.

None of this is unique to any one merchant. Industry research on replatforming consistently points to the same pressure points. According to “The State of Commerce: Replatforming and Migration Trends” report for 2025, 76% of companies named data security their single biggest concern during migration. Separate research on 2025 e-commerce replatforming trends found that a majority of B2B and retail e-commerce sellers surveyed were actively looking to switch platforms to stay competitive and unlock growth. The intent to migrate is high. So is the risk of getting the data part wrong.
Why migrating to Shopify is harder than it looks
Manual migration is slow and expensive: whether traditional migration done in-house or outsourced to a third party, typically costs between 2,000 and 10,000 USD and can take from a few days to several weeks. Moving around 1,000 products or customer records by hand alone can take 30 to 36 hours of work.
E-commerce platforms don’t structure their data the same way: WooCommerce, BigCommerce, and Magento each export data in their own format. Lining up and mapping those columns against Shopify’s expected structure by hand can take 2.5 to 4 hours per file, and not to mention the mismatch can happen.
Shopify’s bulk processing has limits: Large CSV files often exceed what Shopify’s standard import tools can handle in one pass, which leads to timeouts or a browser that freezes mid-upload.
Errors are hard to trace: Most import tools return generic error messages instead of pointing to the exact row that failed. That forces merchants to re-upload the entire file just to fix a handful of records, which often creates duplicates instead of solving the problem.
General risks of switching platforms: such as downtime during cutover, ranking drops from changed URLs, or the work of reconnecting payment, shipping, and CRM systems on the new platform. These are real risks of any platform switch. Goto Shopify does not yet handle this part of the process, though it is on the roadmap for future versions.
Where Goto Shopify fits in

Goto Shopify is a Shopify-embedded app, meaning merchants use it directly inside Shopify Admin instead of jumping between tools or third-party dashboards to migrate to Shopify. It handles five core data types (Products, Customers, Draft Orders, Collections, and Metafields) through a straightforward four-step flow: Upload, Mapping, Preview, and Import.
Three features do most of the heavy lifting behind that flow:
Bulk operations with file chunking: Instead of relying on a browser to push one massive file through Shopify’s import limits, Goto Shopify splits large files into roughly 10MB chunks before upload, and breaks them down further on the server side if the payload passes 100MB. Each chunk is processed on its own through Shopify’s Bulk Operations API. This is the direct answer to the timeout and browser-freeze problem described above.
Linemap error reconciliation: When Shopify returns an error, Goto Shopify traces it back to the exact row in the original file and shows the real reason for the failure, instead of a generic error code. Retrying only reprocesses the rows that actually failed, not the whole file, which keeps duplicate records from piling up. This is what solves the “re-upload everything” problem merchants run into with standard tools.
Custom Script Transformation: Since WooCommerce, BigCommerce, and Magento exports rarely match Shopify’s expected structure out of the box, this feature lets the raw data be transformed into the right format before it’s converted into the file Shopify actually imports. This is what removes most of the manual mapping work described earlier.
Goto Shopify currently focuses on data migration itself. It does not yet reconnect third-party integrations like payment gateways or CRMs, and it does not manage URL redirects for SEO. Both are on the team’s roadmap.
How this compares to other options

| Goto Shopify | LitExtension / Cart2Cart | Manual CSV import | |
| Runs inside Shopify Admin | Yes | No, separate platform | Yes |
| Custom field mapping | Yes | Limited | No |
| Metafields migration | Yes | Limited or paid add-on | No |
| Error recovery (retry failed rows only) | Yes | No, full re-run required | No |
| Typical cost for ~1,000 products | 200 to 500 USD | Varies, often tiered by row count | Free, but 30 to 36 hours of manual work |
| Typical turnaround | Same working day | Hours to days depending on plan | Days to weeks |
The time and cost difference adds up quickly. What normally takes 30 to 36 hours of manual work and 2,000 to 10,000 USD through a traditional migration can come down to 2 to 4 hours and roughly 200 to 500 USD, with the whole process finished in the same working day instead of dragging into weeks.
SupremeTech’s Shopify development capabilities
Beyond Goto Shopify itself, SupremeTech’s team works on custom Shopify app development, API integrations, and data migration projects for merchants who need more than a self-serve tool, including cases with non-standard data sources or heavier customization needs.

Let’s to move your store with Goto Shopify
Switching platforms is a strategic choice, but the data migration behind it shouldn’t force a trade-off between cost, time, and accuracy. Goto Shopify was built to close that gap, so merchants and agencies can spend their energy growing on Shopify instead of untangling a spreadsheet. If you’re planning a move and want to know whether Goto Shopify fits your current data setup, SupremeTech’s team is ready to talk with you.
FAQs Section
The app works with CSV exports, so any platform that can export product, customer, order, or collection data to CSV can be mapped through Goto Shopify, though the Custom Script Transformation step may need adjusting for each source format.
Not yet. URL redirect handling for SEO is not part of the current version and is planned for a future release.
Goto Shopify’s Linemap feature flags exactly which rows failed and why, so only those rows need to be corrected and retried instead of re-running the entire file.
Most migrations of around 1,000 products or customer records finish in 2 to 4 hours, and the full process from upload to a completed store is usually done within the same working day, compared to weeks with a manual approach.
Yes. Because Goto Shopify runs as an embedded app inside Shopify Admin, product, customer, and order data is processed through Shopify’s own Bulk Operations API rather than being sent to and stored on a separate third-party server.
